Chiaroscuro in Notte
Chiaroscuro in Notte
From precious stones to mummy parts, the history of pigments is diverse and occasionally surprising. One such example is tied to the work of Italian painter Michelangelo Caravaggio, who was known for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro—the balance of light and shadow. Aside from from the traditional pigments he used, it’s been hypothesized that he worked with photoluminescence techniques, including painting his canvases with crushed lightning bugs to help capture scenes in the darkened rooms where he worked. Our Chiaroscuro pattern plays with stark light and dark, and incorporates fireflies in their leafy habitat.
